Almighty God,

Sermon

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Let us by prayer and intercession with thanksgiving make our requests to God.

Gracious God,we pray for peace, justice and reconciliation throughout the world. We pray for the honouring of human rights, and for the relief of the oppressed. We give thanks for all that is gracious in the lives of men, women and children. Lord in your mercy …. hear our prayer

We pray for the renewal of the Church in faith, love and service. We pray for Andrew our bishop and for the life of this parish of St. Matthew’s. We give thanks for the gift of your word, the grace of the sacraments and the fellowship of your people. Lord in your mercy …. hear our prayer

We pray for this local community and for all people in their daily life and work. We pray for the young and the elderly, for families, and all who are alone. We give thanks for human skill and creativity and all that reveals your loveliness.  Lord in your mercy …. hear our prayer

We pray for those who are in need; for the sick, sorrowful and bereaved. We pray for all who bring comfort, care and healing. We give thanks for human love and friendship and for all that enriches our daily lives.  Lord in your mercy …. hear our prayer

Let us commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God. Amen.

Hymn: Blue #617 Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee

The Holy Eucharist

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

Leader: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

Leader: Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst…54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.  57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me.  (John 6)

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

All: Dear Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to possess you within my soul. And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, together with all your faithful people gathered around every altar of your Church, and I embrace you with all the affections of my soul. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Concluding Prayer

Ruler of the universe,
all creation yearns for its fulfilment in your Son.
May we who have shared in holy things
grow into maturity in him.
This we ask in the name of the same Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hymn: Blue #401 How Can I Keep from Singing

Leader: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

We pray for: Joshua and Eva Loewen-Samuels, Noa and Judah

Announcements

Coffee Hour Opportunity

We have a wonderful coffee hour at St. Matthew’s, a time of good food and fellowship for all. We are looking for volunteers to run the coffee hour so that we can continue this crucial ministry of hospitality. It includes setting up before the service and cleaning up afterwards. If you have a heart for welcoming people (and if you like good food!), please speak to Audrey Chan or Mtr Catherine.

Sunday School Teachers Needed

Our children are so important! We want to teach them to know Jesus and to love him. So we need Sunday School teachers. Bill and Claire Middleton have provided a wonderful Sunday School this past year. Could you join them, for the sake of our children? If you feel a calling to this important ministry, please speak to Mtr Catherine. Sunday School will begin in October.

Save the Date

Sunday, October 15, 12 noon: Our Jewish-Christian Saints.

Svetlana Panich came to Canada from Ukraine and Russia last year and is pursuing studies in Jewish Christianity at Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto. She will speak about some of the fascinating saints in our Christian tradition who are Jewish. Join us for a light lunch and discussion immediately following the service.
