Collect of the Day
Eternal God,
you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order
the ministries of angels and mortals.
Grant that as your holy angels stand before you in heaven,
so at your command
they may help and defend us here on earth;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Sermon
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Prayers of the People
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father.
Father in heaven, by his blood your Christ has ransomed us to you, and has made us a kingdom and priests to you our God. As the angels minister to you in heaven, strengthen your Church to serve you here on earth. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.
Father in heaven, when the angels greeted the birth of your Son they sang for joy ‘Glory to God and peace on earth’. Bless with Christ’s peace the nations of the world. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.
Father in heaven, your Son has promised to your children the care of the guardian angels who look upon your face. Protect by your mercy our neighbours, families and friends. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.
Father in heaven, you give your angels charge over those who trust in you to guard them in all their ways.Be with those in trouble …,rescue them and show them your salvation. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.
Father in heaven, your angel declares ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.’ ‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘for they may rest from their labours, for they take with them the record of their deeds.’ Enfold in your love [… and] all who come in faith to your judgement seat in heaven. Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.
Father in heaven, the angels sing by day and night around your throne: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty.’ With Michael, prince of the angels, who contends by our side, with Gabriel, your herald, who brings glad tidings, with Raphael, the protector, who ministers your healing, and with the whole company of heaven, we worship you, we give you glory, we sing your praise and exalt you for ever. Amen.

The Holy Eucharist
A Prayer for Spiritual Communion
Leader: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Leader: Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst…54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. (John 6)
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
All: Dear Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to possess you within my soul. And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, together with all your faithful people gathered around every altar of your Church, and I embrace you with all the affections of my soul. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
Concluding Prayer
Eternal God,
you have fed us with the bread of angels.
May we who come under their protection,
like them give you continual service and praise;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Hymn: Blue #320 Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones
Leader: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
We pray for: Mark and Virginia MacDonald, Rory, Brenna and Adrian
Announcements
Thanksgiving Fruits Needed
Next Sunday, October 8th, we celebrate our Harvest Home Sunday. Following an old tradition, parishioners are asked to bring fresh produce to church a little before the service in order to decorate the front of the church. The produce is then taken to the Mustard Seed to be used to make soups and sandwiches for those in need.
Coffee Hour Opportunity
We have a wonderful coffee hour at St. Matthew’s, a time of good food and fellowship for all. We are looking for volunteers to run the coffee hour so that we can continue this crucial ministry of hospitality. It involves setting up before the service and cleaning up afterwards. If you have a heart for welcoming people (and if you like good food!), please speak to Audrey Chan or Mtr Catherine.
Sunday School Begins Today!
The children are invited to join Mtr Catherine on the chancel steps for our children’s song and then to go to Sunday School. We welcome new teachers. Our children are so important: we want to teach them to know Jesus and to love him. If you feel a calling to this important ministry, please speak to Mtr Catherine.
