Parish Life

A community to learn, share and serve in

At St. Matthew’s we’re constantly looking at new ways to serve the community of Riverdale. Here are a few of the outreach initiatives we’ve been involved with.

Emily’s House

Emily’s House is a ten bed children’s hospice in Riverdale that is committed to optimizing the quality of the lives of children and their families battling a life-limiting illness, through the provision of integrated respite and pediatric palliative care, in a home like setting. A number of our parishioners are currently volunteers at Emily’s House and the Philip Aziz Centre.

Neighbourhood BBQ

Every September St. Matthew’s hosts a big BBQ for our neighbours. All of the food and drinks are provided by parishioners. Last year we had live music from a neighbourhood band made up of children and adults, face-painting, a bouncy castle, and a tour of the church by the founder of the Riverdale Historical Society, a member of St. Matthew’s. This wonderful tradition is becoming more and more a part of the fabric of our neighbourhood.

St. John the Compassionate

St. John the Compassionate is an Orthodox mission in Riverdale that has been serving those in need since 1986. They have various programs throughout the week including after-school programs for school children and drop-in meals for those who are hungry.

Neighbourhood Clothing Swap

Twice a year St. Matthew’s hosts a neighbourhood clothing swap at the church. These events, in the spring and fall, always draw a great response from neighbours and provide a great opportunity to give away some gently used clothing and gain some new items!

Learn & Explore

Our life together at St. Matthew’s is not limited to Sunday mornings. There are a growing number of opportunities to learn and explore the Christian faith and to connect with one another outside of our main Sunday service.

Bible Study

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path,” (Psalm 119:105).
St Matthew’s hosts a few different small groups where we help each other follow Christ, aided by scripture, prayer and community. On Thursday evenings there is a Philippians bible study at the church at 7:30pm. A young families group meets every other Saturday afternoon and a women’s group meets monthly at the church on a Wednesday night. Please contact us for more information.

Pastoral Care

At St. Matthew’s we’re committed to helping our community through all of life’s stages, through the good and the bad.

St. Matthew’s has a group of trained pastoral visitors who are active members of the church. They’re available to provide continuing or short-term care for members who are experiencing illness, infirmity, bereavement, isolation, or a variety of other challenges.
A lay pastoral visitor’s role is different from that of the clergy; they’re neither counselors or crisis managers. Instead, they offer friendship, encouragement and, when appropriate, spiritual and prayer support. To arrange for a visit, call the church office or email us and the information will be passed along to the group coordinator. You’ll be contacted shortly thereafter to arrange for a visit.
Rest assured, all inquires and visits are held in the strictest confidence.
